Visiting Europe during Corona 2020 – Part 3: Lake Como

Visiting Europe during Corona – Part 3: Lake Como

After our stay at Lucerne Lake Como in Italy was on the agenda. Destination and country number three. We were curious about what Italy was like now. Well, here too, we encountered few Corona obstacles. Of course, there were measures in place, but we didn't notice much of them ourselves.

From Switzerland to Northern Italy

Immediately after my visit to the Hotel Schweizerhof, we left Lucerne again. In about 3.5 hours, we would arrive in the town of Lezzeno on Lake Como. It would have taken longer if we'd had problems with the Gotthard Tunnel, but with a quarter of an hour's delay, it wasn't too bad. At “normal” times, you sometimes wait an hour before you're allowed through. Cars are only admitted in controlled numbers to prevent accidents in the tunnel. Nowadays, only one tunnel tube is in use, so you have oncoming traffic. A new tunnel is being built, but that will take years.

Finally, after a relatively relaxed drive to Como, we had to drive for about 30 minutes along the lake to arrive in Lezzeno. The city of Como itself is, incidentally, also a beautiful destination to visit during a group or incentive trip. The city is located 67 kilometres from Milan airport and is the largest and most important place on this beautiful lake. Como has a long and eventful history, dating back to Roman times, which is reflected in the historic city centre.

Resort with panoramic views of Lake Como

So, we were on our way to Lezzeno. A drive along a very narrow and winding road eventually brought us to our destination: Filario Hotel & Residences. This hotel is located in a panoramic spot in Lezzeno and features an infinity pool overlooking Lake Como, a restaurant, and luxuriously appointed rooms and apartments. This elegant and exclusive hotel offers complimentary WiFi throughout. Each accommodation includes air conditioning and a balcony with lake views. The apartments and houses also have a fully equipped kitchen and a dining area.

We had booked a duplex villa and were immediately impressed upon arrival. Not only was the resort fantastic, but the view was absolutely breathtaking. Face masks were required when walking around the hotel, but as we mostly stayed outdoors, we barely had to use them.

A wonderful time on and by the water

The next two days we had hired a speed boat. In Italy, you are allowed to drive a boat up to 5 metres yourself. However, with a boating licence, like we have, you are also allowed to drive a larger boat. The following morning, after enjoying a delicious breakfast, the boat was moored in front of the resort and we were able to board. The weather was beautiful and we had lovely cool drinks with us in a cool bag, and soon we were off with our first destination being Bellagio. A village with allure and loved by many actors and actresses, including George Clooney, who owns a house here. What a wonderful first day. It was warm and the water of Lake Como is just right in temperature during the summer. Wonderfully refreshing and cooling.

For group trips in this area, we also like to include a boat trip on the itinerary. Both on Lake Como and Lake Maggiore, you'll be amazed by the beautiful surroundings, wonderful nature, and unique houses by the water. The lunch locations by the water with the most delicious fresh dishes also make a day on the water one to never forget.

We also enjoyed a lovely lunch by the lake on our way and then went back out on the water. After spending the whole day on the water, we returned feeling relaxed and dived into the infinity pool with a drink at the poolside overlooking the lake. And because we enjoyed the restaurant by the lake, at our own resort, so much, we chose to dine there again. Delicious wood-fired pizzas, focaccia and salads, accompanied by a nice glass of wine.

Northern Italy as a fantastic incentive destination

One of the reasons we choose to offer Northern Italy and the lakes as a destination for group trips is, of course, the delicious Italian cuisine, but also the beautiful, stylish hotels in the area. With Milan within easy travelling distance, the combination of city and nature is quickly made. The perfect recipe for enjoying La Dolce Vita.

We also enjoyed our days on Lake Como, but it was time to leave again. On to a new destination and adventure. We love variety, and hey presto, the suitcases were packed again and off to... Monte Carlo in Monaco, country number 4.
