goMICE organised this visit for an internationally expanding organisation in collaboration with Pim van den Berg of Perspectives, to the border area of North Korea where a guided tour is possible and a look across the border is an option. Inspiration, but also a reality check, was one of the reasons for the visit.
The border visit in Korea
- Seoul is only 56 kilometres from the border with North Korea.
- A bizarre contrast between a super-modern open metropolis and a world that is closed, standing still and where nothing is allowed.
- A comparison with the Berlin Wall is certainly appropriate.
- In the strip of no-man's-land on the border, 2.5 million landmines are hidden and on either side of the border the heaviest weapons are constantly aimed at each other.
- And to think that family members live on either side of that border and never see each other again.
The deception of North Korea
North Korea has erected a number of “fake towns” in the sights of those binoculars (see the photo below), facades of houses and apartment complexes where no one lives. This solely to keep up the appearance of a happy country.
