Island hopping in the Netherlands!
When hearing the word “island hopping”, most people quickly think of an azure blue sea, pearl-white beaches and a trip to the Greek Cyclades or the Balearic Islands. These are, of course, fantastic destinations to travel to, but in a period when free travel is not yet possible without restriction, we would naturally love to take you along on the unique possibilities that our own country has to offer! Because island hopping is definitely also possible closer to home: namely on our very own Wadden Islands!
The Wadden Islands
The Dutch Wadden Islands consist of five islands, which means five times the enjoyment! The combination of the open horizon, the boundless sky stretching above the Wadden Sea and the natural transition between mudflats and the sea make a visit to the Wadden Islands a truly special experience.
Everyone of course knows the order in which the Wadden Islands lie by means of the mnemonic TV-TAS. Each island is unique and has its own charm:
Texel
With a length of about 20 kilometres and a width of 8 kilometres, this island is the largest of the Wadden Islands. Texel is also the most quickly accessible island at about a 20-minute ferry crossing from Den Helder or by private plane! There is a huge amount to experience on this island: for example, go mountain biking through the Texel forest, play golf in the dunes or catamaran sailing along the fantastic coastline.
Vlieland
Together with Schiermonnikoog, picturesque Vlieland is the quietest of the Wadden Islands. The island boasts magnificent scenery and cars are not permitted here for non-islanders. Despite the peace and quiet, there is also plenty to experience and do on Vlieland: go blokarting on the beach, for instance, surf rafting across the North Sea, cycle via winding woodland and shell paths to the lighthouse or visit the enormous expanse of sand known as the Vliehors, also referred to as the Sahara of the North!
Terschelling
Terschelling is a varied and fun island full of charming villages and has the widest beach in Europe! A barrel of cranberries once washed ashore on Terschelling and the island has been full of these berry plants ever since. Therefore, be sure to taste these little fruits. Prefer something more active? Go canoeing on the mudflats or powerkiting on the beach.
Ameland
Experience the ultimate island feeling on Ameland. The combination of unspoiled greenery, 27 kilometres of beach, sand dunes, heathland and sea is fantastic! Discover the Wadden Sea and go mudflat hiking, step aboard a special seal-watching boat to spot seals or enjoy a cocktail at beach club The Sunset, also known as the Ibiza of the North Sea.
Schiermonnikoog
Schiermonnikoog may well be the smallest Dutch Wadden Island, but it is magnificent in terms of nature. The entire island has the status of a National Park. Schiermonnikoog is an island where it is often windy and therefore a perfect place for kite flying. Schiermonnikoog is also the darkest place in the Netherlands and thus the ideal location to admire the starry sky.
Island hopping
We at goMICE know the islands well and regularly organise group and incentive trips to one or more of the Wadden Islands. Fantastic programmes can be organised there!
Start the first activity straight from your own location, for example, and organise a cabriolet rally to Harlingen from where the boat is taken to Vlieland. Spend the first few days of the programme on this island with activities such as sailing, beachcombing and a party evening on the beach! Next, step onto RIB boats and experience a real adrenaline rush during the boat trip to Texel while spotting seals at the same time. Enjoy fantastic restaurants on Texel, go kite buggying across the beautiful beach or windsurfing; the island is extremely well suited for this! Conclude the island hopping with a helicopter flight to Den Helder or opt for a crossing by shrimp cutter, there are many possibilities!
