In recent years, my family and I have also travelled a lot, both within and outside Europe. Through my experience, I know many wonderful, special and/or practical tips that I am happy to share with you. I know many special places, off the beaten track. These can be stops with or without an overnight stay that make the route to the south of Europe just that little bit more fun, interesting and exciting.
Over the coming weeks, I will highlight a few at a time. Hopefully, this will inspire you to skip the motorway hotel or service station and choose a much nicer alternative instead.
Travel tips: Netherlands-Switzerland-Italy
Did you know that the Rhine flows through 6 countries? The Rhine rises in Switzerland, near the Gotthard, then flows via Liechtenstein, Austria, (Lake Constance), France, Germany into the Netherlands and ends in the North Sea.
So much for a geography lesson. But did you also know that there is a major attraction situated between Germany and Switzerland? A perfect place to plan a stopover! I am referring to the town of Schaffhausen. It is known for having the largest waterfalls in Europe (at least in terms of water volume and width).

Here the Rhine plunges down about 30 metres over a width of 150 metres. Around 600 cubic metres flow down every second, which is truly fantastic to see. You can also take a boat to sail almost underneath the waterfall, but of course that takes more time.
My boys thought it was fantastic to see and my husband was astonished that he had never heard anyone talk about this before! “Why don’t we write a blog about this?” he said. The Braadworst aan de oever also went down a treat. A unique little terrace where, in the heat, you get a cool mist from the cascading water. A lovely way to wrap up the stopover!
